A Fresh Take on a Legendary Dirtbox

From boutique builders to mass-produced manufacturers, every pedal maker out there has their own version of the classic green 3-knob dirtbox. The Moxie is Brian Wampler’s homage to that iconic pedal, but elevated with some serious tonal versatility! This overdrive pedal starts out with an authentic 4558 chip and top-tier components to deliver everything from a slight boost to roaring heavy overdrive tones — in short, it’s everything a great screamer-style pedal should be. However, that’s only the beginning: the Moxie has been upgraded with a Voice switch and a Fat switch to throw a wrench into the standard green OD design, providing you with both increased gain and enhanced clarity. Did we mention that it does all of this in a tiny mini-sized form factor? The Moxie overdrive may be steeped in tradition, but it's no clone: it offers a bold new take on the screamer-style formula.

Two custom switches for increased flexibility

Brian’s take on the classic green box overdrive pedal seriously switches up the tried-and-true 3-knob formula by tossing in a few extra switches for increased tonal flexibility.

  • Fat: By engaging the fat switch, the Moxie introduces a custom MOSFET clipping stage for a, as Wampler describes, “zen-like” overdrive tone. To put it simply, it ups the gain and body of your tone without introducing tone-sucking muddiness — Sweetwater gutiarists love this setting for adding some extra punch to a lead section or filling out a rhythm tone.
  • Voice: The original screamer-style overdrive is infamous (and beloved) for its huge midrange bump. As much as musicians love that iconic sound, it’s a far cry from the “transparent” sound that modern guitarists demand. To offer the same green OD flavor with a more natural feel, the Moxie features a Voice switch that cuts back on the mids, while simultaneously boosting the high and low frequencies. This results in a clearer, more articulate tone, and it serves as an excellent foil to the Moxie’s standard mid-heavy tone.

Wampler Moxie Overdrive Pedal Features:

  • Based on a classic green overdrive pedal and powered by the classic 4558 for authentic screaming tones
  • Ultra-flexible design goes from a smooth boost to all-out amp-driving grit
  • Incredibly sensitive to picking dynamics
  • Stacks well with other overdrives
  • Voice switch enhances clarity and increases transparency by dropping midrange and kicking up the bass and treble
  • Fat switch incorporates a custom-designed MOSFET clipping stage to inject your sound with a dose of organic drive
  • Mini pedal form factor is exceptionally pedalboard friendly

Most excellent!

The voice and fat switches give it more tonal options than the old standby TS. I like it stacked with the Tumnus after it.

A TS pedal I actually LOVE.

Over the past 30 years I have owned and got rid of every screamer pedal made. Hated all of them. I do actually still own on TS. But, I saw this come out and for a while ignored it. Started seeing reviews and realized that while it's a "green" pedal, it was something different. So, I called my Sales Engineer and ordered it. I can't believe how much I actually enjoy this pedal. I use it in the "Zen" like settings mostly. But both modes are equally great. I finally can say I have a TS that I love.

Mean, Green, and ready to Scream

I've had multiple Tube Screamers and TS style pedals over the last 18 years and I understood why so many people liked them but I could never get them to sound good with my rig and playing style. That all changed with the Moxie. It's so tweak-able that you go from SRV style blues to stacking it with another OD and flip the fat switch and now you have hard rock/heavy metal territory. I am currently using a LP and I'm stacking a Duke of Tone, a SD1 and the Moxie into a Blues Jr and I can get almost any tone I want. Shoutout to Stuart Niven for getting me this little guy.

WOW!!!!

I watch as many videos as you can imagine about this pedal, they all looked and sounded good, still I was a little skeptical deep down. I put a little pedalboard together for some light, practical gigs like church, small gigs and little stuff. I even put this on my B pedalboard since the A one is being tweaked at the moment so I had a church gig to play at and I had to put some very last minute. With the TILT by REVV as a foundation for my tone I went ahead and took the little project pedalboard, and oh my!!!! the tone of this thing is insane!! really amazing, It sounds like a boutique, sophisticated and simply ridiculous TS, I powered it 18v and it's so open, seriously love it. I think I'm going to get a couple more. Superbly amazing tones..

Just another Screamer pedal? Hardly!

Wampler has taken the classic Screamer circuit and really improved on it. The Voice switch allows you to either have the regular Screamer tone or a more balanced sound without the usual mid-range hump of the original. The Fat switch adds some additional "umph" to the gain stage for a more "meaty" sound. The pedal can take 9V-18V, so you can get the added headroom that the extra voltage offers. It stacks very well with other distortion/overdrive pedals, too. As usual, the build quality is superb, which is what you expect from a Wampler product. If I could say one thing "bad" about it, I wish it had a blue LED like all of my other Wampler pedals in my fly board instead of a green one (I get it, it's a green Screamer pedal), but that's just being nit-picky. A great addition to anyone's pedal collection!
